The History And Benefits Of Educational Technology

The phrase “educational technology” has been around for many years, and it’s also known as learning technology or instructional technology; nevertheless, attempting to define the term correctly may be something of an issue. During the early 1960s the debate on an earlier term surrounded whether or not this should be spelled ‘audiovisual’ or ‘audio-visual.’ Last of all the expression was changed from ‘audiovisual instruction’ to ‘audiovisual communications.’

In 1963 the Association for Educational Communication and Technology (AECT) first identified the term based on the ideas of the Commission on Definition and Terminology. The commission affirmed the term ‘audiovisual communications’ but was able to replace it with other words once it gained enough support. The term ‘educational technology’ would not become accepted for another ten years.
